History at Night : William Barrett Travis “Victory or Death” – A Deep Dive into the Story
February 27 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Please join us on Thursday, February 27th at 6pm for our History at Night program you won’t want to miss: William Barrett Travis’ Victory or Death Letter – A Deep Dive into the Revered Story!
William Barrett Travis’ iconic “Victory or Death” letter from the Alamo is considered perhaps the most cherished and important foundational document in Texas history. But, there is much more to the story. Join us as we explore answers to questions like: What may have inspired the “victory or death” closing? Why did Travis address his missive to San Felipe de Austin? How did it get from the Alamo, surrounded by Santa Ana’s army, to San Felipe? What practical effect did the letter have on 1836 Texas? What happened to the letter over the last almost 200 years? And join us as we re-print the letter on our 19th-century museum press, just as it was done in the turbulent days when the words mattered so much to Texas’ future.
Led by knowledgeable and experienced site printing volunteers Frank Michel and Mark Keith, this program is free of charge and will certainly be one to remember. Light refreshments will be served with all donations benefiting our program sponsor, the Friends of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site.
